@666moshpit666 That's the point.

The 3rd sketch is a true testament to their ability as actors and directors, the ability to cause raucous laughter one mine and then heartbreaking sadness the next.

@waysworth Just like the US Red Dwarf pilot. The original RD writers were brought into look at it. And while they said parts of it were funny, it had no overarching plot. In essence it was long line of badly connected jokes. The RD writers attempted to reign the script in and bring in a more contorlled performance. The producers agreed to thier version, but over time kept tweaking it till it was back at what they had originally written. And of cource the result was awful.

brilliant, but not unusual, to actually end a comedy routine. Brits tend to do it, as in Black Adder and Extras, whereas Americans tend to let them run beyond funny into oblivion. I think this is because British actors and comedians are often more involved with the writing and exercise more control over their work. I like Mitchell & Webb, and think their endings for these sketches, were warm, in character and perfect.

the Sherlock Holmes sketch is not 'oddly depressing' it's intentionally sad.

The first time i saw the last one, my jaw nearly hit the floor. I've never cried over a television show but that one made me fight back tears only moments after laughing at "I'M A CHINAMEN!"

@DrewDPC That is exactly what they were going for. A classy, serious end to their comedy show.

@DrewDPC That's what they were going for. THey talk about it in one of the 'behind the scenes' bits.
They're both actually amazing actors and directors. The atmosphere they created in the emergency broadcast is perfect, and the last scene is actually heart-wrenching at the end...
