Mamod SP6 Forest Classics limited edition released before the standard Mamod SP6. New connecting rod and cylinder cover have been added by myself. Seen here working on air delivered by an aquarium air pump at very low pressure.

  • hi peter just wondering if you get the same on the sp6 engine ive got.. at the end of a stroke the piston rod seems to jolt very slightly and also when starting a stroke?

  • Not sure what is causing this since I have never had the cylinder apart. There will be a small amount of slack on the small end of the connecting rod (i.e. the joint between the connecting rod and the piston rod). This may be causing the "jolt" but that is not a problem. Always remember to keep all of the linkage lubricated whenever operating your engine.

  • is it possible to stop the engine when the connecting rod is at the bottom of the flywheel (AT about 8 SECONDS ON THE VIDEO) then open the steam valve so the piston is then pushed the opposite way?????

  • Because it is fitted with a slip eccentric you need to stop the flywheel and then turn it through at least 180 degrees in the opposite direction to reverse the engine.

  • Does the steam exhaust to the chimney on the SP6? On the new Centurian traction engine it just exhausts from a hole at the bottom of the valve chest, but the hole is tapped to take a 1/8th pipe.

  • The SP6 exhausts in the same way through the bottom of the valve chest - the new Mamod loco does the same. I had considered adding pipework to carry the exhaust steam to the chimney but wasn't happy with drilling parts of the original metal-work so I left it as supplied.
