Anechoic coatings, active sound suppression, hydrodynamic effects make detection of a US submarine an exercise in frustration. Magnetic signature is only present while a vessel is stationary. The current issue torpedoes have 10 times the calculative power of the basic laptop pc, have flash pocket memory, and are water, pressure, and shock resistant. and can shut down and wait for a target to pass. Their not smart, they're brilliant.

@hububub46 It is definitely a 640-class due to the lower mounted fairwaters on the sail structure. I enlarged the image. It is either 641 or 642 (pre-1975) . Hull numbers were painted out after that period. The 616 and 640-class submarines numbered 31 total and were the backbone of the deterrent fleet thoughout most of the Cold War until the Ohio-class came on line during the 80s. The submarine that I served on; USS Ulysses S. Grant (SSBN-631) was in service until the early 90s.

I don't know who posted this but the SSBN on the surface looks like the Kamehameha at Pearl...can anyone confirm the hull number 642?

spout your shit...i was there.....we win

Your correct subs Reflect sound (albeit much less than one would expect) Anechoic tiles absorb quite a lot of ambient sound. We can even alter that reflected sound with active out of phase processing that changes what to listeners hear. Active sonar (ping) is different and very dangerous to both parties. The enemy gives away their position with each transmission as well as locating their adversary. All this is why they collide a lot. Can't see each other. Google "Ivy Bells" for some fun stuff.

Magnetic Anomaly Detection, requires a difference between the background and the target. If the sub is moving in creates an anomaly (difference) in the signature. Thus the name. The amount of steel will determine the size of the return. I know it sounds wrong since the name MAD seems to indicate that magnetism is measured but well the Navy is famous for long names.

"Magnetic signature is only present while a vessel is stationary."
With as much steel as they have, submarines--whether in motion or not--have always been quite detectable.
That is an absolutely drop-dead gorgeous recording of the Navy Hymn. Who is singing it? Do you know? If so, please tell. How can I get a copy?
You probably know this, but there are at least two verses of the Navy Hymn written especially for submariners. Thanks, Molly

thanks.........it's nothing great. just tribute to sub fleets world wide. Sacrificing so much to live in a tin can for months on end to serve their country regardless what country it is. I get so pissed when i see the remarks from hate mongers and people that have nothing better to do then have prejudiced remarks because there us another countries subs in video. If they spent as much time trying to live in harmony this world would be such a wonderful place. Thanks for your comment.
