@westexpipeliner W8 can have the same power and torque like an normal V8 (wich have the same capacity (litre) and is in that category where the W8 is) and its aproximately 25-30% lighter than a normal V8 and its shorter, so it can be placed into smaller cars and less weight = less fuel consumption = reducing costs.

So the W8 engine can have the same power and torque like a normal V8 engine, but W8 has aproximately the weight and the size like an average V6...W8 is lighter than the smallest V8.

@VcottntailW I agree. German engineering is simply better than anywhere else, well? maybe swiss is just as good. A lot of R & D goes into german stuff to make it right. I am not saying American stuff is crap, its actually quite good. My daily drive has a buick 3.8L v6. Its simplicity is its key to longevity and reliability which is what america is good at. Btw I am aussie so I am not biased and can see the facts clear as day. German engineering FTW!

@wpeti890720 It is hardly approx. the weight of a standard V6, unless those additional connecting rods, pistons are wiehgtless... i suppose they aren't though. The block itself isn't smaller - its just shorter. So it is as heavy as a V8 but only shorter by, say, 20% (at most). It would rather be interesting to know the vibration level, and the harmonics that are generated compared to a standard V8. Apart from that i see only VWs urge of diversity in using them.

Too bad VW killed the W8. It was very expensive to make because of the special castings required to produce the W block. And it requires far more machining than a standard V8 block.
