Sen. Smith: I simply hit the end of the rope if you will. I felt I had to speak up because if these sacrifices are being made in pursuit of policy that cannot succeed then we need to admit it and readjust in a way that the American people and our soldiers find worth the sacrifice and this is not.—I find examples like the British generals day after day in the first world war would send thousands of their men running into machine guns and not make adjustments. I find that criminal.

  • We're supposedly there to end terrorism. Saddam was our partner in deceit. He like the Shah was just another puppet to the powers that be in the world. We gave him poison gas and weapons that were destroyed after we invaded Iraq the first time. He asked permission to go into Kuwait and we gave that permission. The story about the babies being thrown on the floor out of incubators has been proven a fraud, Bush concocted the story to invade. He and his criminal made $millions.

  • Smith and Freedom Watch are also the parties responsible for all those lame ads smearing Merkley on Facebook and MySpace. Smith's running a very McCain-like campaign.

    Merkley 08!

  • I just voted for Merkley today. :)

  • Smith gave that speech in the Senate two years ago, long before beginning a re-election campaign... I'm not a fan of the Senator, but to say that he's just taking this position to get re-elected seems to be a flawed argument from a hardened, biased view.

  • Gordon Smith's a liar who'll say or do anything to get votes.

    Merkley 08

  • He was right, like Senator McCain there needed to be an adjustment in strategy; why repeat the same mistakes rather than admin they are wrong. Rumsfeld resigned;Gen Petraeus became chief of US Central Command and introduced a new strategy that is working. You wont hear about it's success from the liberal media because they were politically invested in U.S. defeat.

  • Gordon '08

  • Courageous?

    or politically expedient?

Oregon is squarely against the war.

    Smith is up for re-election.

He's a smart guy. Are these his values? Prior votes in favor of war? Let's add this up. I am suspicious of this move on his part.
