  • @DJariko The ears are often described as making locking off easier, but not all rescue 8s have such big ears. As such they don't provide enough width to lock off properly. As the video author is entirely right in what he says, they really are used to stop the rope switching up on itself (creating a girth hitch) when there's no load on the live line.

  • I believe that the "ears" or "wings" on the rescue 8-ring is meant also to make the locking easier. There is video about it somewhere in here at YouTube
