@vominator there was a similar dish consisting of stale unused bread and slightly sour milk mixed with sugar that was eaten by the poor of dublin ireland until about the 1960s. booze may have been involved.

the olde treasure island movie had a character eat this...smashed up bread with booze on it. I dont remember if it had sugar though. I think he called it "rum duck"

down on their luck folks came up with some interesting meals a long time ago and it wouldjn't surprise me if this was one of them. i know deniro made travis a man from the midwest, maybe he got the recipe from there.
