A beautiful man, who stood up for what he believed in, and like so many like him, suffered unjustly for it. Read the John Carlos Story. It is a brilliant tale of an amazing life.
@jaydenluke They were actually Tommy gloves. I was speaking with Dr. Carlos about this recently and so that is how I came to know this. Peter Norman was indeed a heroic figure, and John Carlos has always loved him like a brother. It was Peter Norman who requested that he not left off the sculpture of John and Tommie at San Jose State. When John asked why, he said so everyone who comes to look at the sculpture can stand up there with John and Tommie as he did in 1968.
Would have been good to see at least a tiny mention of the dude who gave them their gloves.. ;) Australian Peter Norman also showed tremendous courage in supporting them. He lent his gloves after Carlos forgot his and wore a Human Rights badge in solidarity with them. He also was ostracised by the Australian media, he got a really rough time, ended up on the grog I believe and died young. So sad. As a young Australian he's one of my favourite athletes, yet barely anyone even knows his name.
today i was at my track meet that tommie smith hosted!! he was there and i talked to him on a personal (track) level....he is older and is still an amazing runner....wen i talked to him he wouldnt let me finish m y sentence....... but its ok cuz ik he was stressed out about how the metals were all messded up :/ so im fine :)
