In a project jointly funded by Yukon Mine Training Association (YMTA) and Alexco Resource Corp, eight Yukon First Nation students graduated with the knowledge and skills needed to start their careers as underground miners. The Underground Mine Training Program, from the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology, was held at Bellekeno Mine, one of the world's most renowned high-grade silver districts. The course consisted of two four-week sessions, which included both an in-class component and hands-on training and mentorship, with a focus on safety and industry best practices. On graduation all eight students received job offers and currently are employed as underground miners in Yukon's mining industry. The video, "Bad to the Bone" was a collaborative effort of all the students and their mentor and instructor, Steeve Taylor. YMTA and Alexco Resource Corp were proud to be part of a successful partnership that turned training into employment for Yukoner's in their backyard.
