@BillKiernan It's more the way it causes people to think - not so much as an individual, but part of a collective. It may be a commonly overlooked reason why people are closed off to critiques of their religion, country, political parties, etc. which has nothing to do with the actual arguments or criticisms. Like being part of a group helps turn that part of the brain off, and puts them almost entirely on the defensive.
