There are a lot of places in the world dependent on air travel for their econemy, especially islands which do not have any other rapid link to the rest of the world.
Consider the fact that many tourist areas preserve their ecology for tourism. No air travel and they'll have to tear up the rainforests and coral reefs to feed their people.
The total carbon footprint of aviation is very small. If it tripled it would still be small. Aircraft are actually extremely effecient per-passenger.

I Think you have to be a Brit to "get" all the humor. It appears there has been some resistance and blowback to building new runways and increasing air traffic in the UK.

Having people take planes more often than driving cars would help the environment a little bit, but pollution still would go into the air from planes. Interesting video, though. :)
