I've always thought that the passing of the cross from Wolfwood to Vash had more meaning than the ending battle. Wolfwood wanted forgiveness for his sins. For killing. All along he had held that cross, a heavy burden on his back. The burden of taking a life. The cross was passed, right after Vash killed his first human being, with his own hand.
