Shocking Outtakes from The Year Without a Santa Claus 1974

After years of creating hit Holiday Specials, some of the long time regular cast members of Jules Bass and Arthur Rankin Jr.'s features started feeling the curse of their success, and slid down the slippery slope of drugs, late nights, and painful self realizations of emptyness that come only to the worlds most wealthy and successful.

One character actor in particular was the reindeer, Blitzen, who, despite a clean Christian upbringing, and having many devoted friends, simply let go of himself in his later years and could not keep up with the ever increasing demands of his stop motion directors.
In these rare out takes, we find Blitzen showing up on set completely drunk, and unable to focus on performing a single line of dialogue. It was later revealed that his wife had left him the night previous in favor of a more sober and younger buck. This of course led to the famous failed suicide attempt in Santa's sleigh on January 3rd 1975, when he locked himself in the garage, only to discover that there was no tale pipe attached to the vehicle.

Blitzen has since found work on campy B-screamer flicks, and making self ridiculing appearances on several popular sitcoms.

Fame is a fickle mistress to both man and beast.
