CHAN:
Drought is affecting northern India severely. Crops are ripening ahead of time before reaching full maturity.
STORY:
Here in the state of Uttarakhand, the severe lack of rain is making the main winter crop, mustard, ripen ahead of time. The region's main winter crops of mustard, wheat and spinach should be harvested during the months of February or March, not in January.
Farmers are worried their crops have not reached their full potential.
[Murli Chaudhary, Farmer]: (male, Hindi)
"We have been facing lots of problems over the past two to three years, because of not enough rainfall. This year our mustard crop has ripened before usual, and the premature ripening of a crop is a bad omen. 75 percent of our crop has already been hit."
The drought is also making the Earth rise in temperature, making it hard for farmers to sow their staple crops.
Half of India's population depends on agriculture for their livelihood.
