They are connector tracks. Each section of the layout is a portable module. Modules are joined in a layout by clamping with two "C" clamps and inserting 5" sections of snap track. There is a uniform standard of rules which clubs follow, so they can join up and make bigger layouts with other clubs.

From what I can see a nice looking layout. Why aren't the tracks in the foreground ballested?
