The biggies should NEVER have monkeyed with the formula; they should have left at 10 competing in swimsuit, evening gown and talent, then narrowing it to the final five, and from there, selecting the standard bearer.

I think people need to understand that pageants and television have changed forever and will never be the same. The sophistication and elegance of the pageants in the past, and even TV shows like "What's My Line" are shows that could never appeal to television audiences of today. It is sad, but it's nice that we can still experience it here on You Tube

Terry's very deep religious convictions drenched every aspect of her life. She also happened to be a very open and honest person not given to cliches or pretending. I think that's why she made a perfect television personality because she so effortlessly connected to people. Note that in her crowning she maintains her poise and dignity, too; that is class!

I am so glad someone posted this. I used to watch Miss America with my mom who's gone now. We're from Wisconsin and TerryAnne was the 1st Miss America from our state. Mom was sleeping at this point in the competition and when Burt announced her win, I jumped up screaming...'she won! She won!'. Brings back so many good memories.

@LithiumCitrate yeah, i gotta agree, TV today is one giant cesspool,,,,don't even get started on REALITY TV.

I used to wait eagerly every September for Miss America. It was an American institution. Atlantic City made a big mistake letting it go. Miss America still exists, but the format, political correctness and image have changed, and not for the better. Not what it used to be. I long for the pageants of yesteryear.

@JONROSE44 I do, too, but I still watch the pageant. I admire the new winner, but believe she is a bit too young.

@Juliaflo Don't be a fool! Money runs EVERYTHING. Money is our God!!! If it can make someone more money, then anything and everything must be changed. Case closed.

@JONROSE44 I agree...this was when it meant something to be crowned Miss America...that;s why the tears of joy the look of joy and surpirse when their name was announced...and the girls actually worked hard to be Miss America and earn the scholarship..We should start a concerted effort to get the Miss America Pageant back where it belongs...in ATLANTIC CITY!!!!

Laurel Lea Scheafer was one on my favorites as well...the beginning of the 1970's produced three of the best Miss America's ever...Phyllis George, Laurel Lea Scheafter and Terry Meeuwsen... so long gone are the glory days of the Miss America Pageant......I miss the glory days... even some former Miss America's downplay the impact it had in it's glory days.........I still miss the former years nonetheless

every september now, i STILL feel like it's time to turn on tv for the miss america pageant, live from atlantic city...so sad it's no longer there and not held at summer's end anymore. like america's value system, the pageant (once held in high esteem), is devalued and mocked...

Yes, VTMCompany, that is so true and sad as well....the Miss America pageant was once an American Icon, and look what they've done to it now....just a reality show? ...how very sad for what as once an American Icon........
