Rafe Esquith is the only teacher to have been awarded the President's Medal of the Arts and is the author of the bestseller, Teach Like Your Hair's On Fire. Rafe Esquith teaches in Los Angeles, and his super-successful, inspirational teaching methods have helped thousands of children maximize their potential. His new book is Lighting Their Fires: Raising Extraordinary Children, a book that enlarges on his themes and shows us how to make our kids not just great students but thoughtful and honorable citizens.

I just had the pleasure of hearing him give this speech in person for a new teacher/new to district event for the Houston Independent School District. Very inspiring!

I received a Masters of Arts in Teaching degree in May. I had it framed. Then I spent the first half of the summer looking for a good land-fill to throw it in. But I've made the decision to teach, and its because of Rafe Esquith. So, I am, in the interest of doing good, I'm entering a state sponsored criminal conspiracy. I'm convinced that Socrates and Confusious would have done the same. My goal is not to be as good as Rafe Esquith: it is merely to be better than the wicked.

If every teacher would be like this teacher, our whole entire world would be different. This is what we need: time, perseverance, dedication and love. This teacher really loves what he does.
Congratulations!

Rafe, you are such an inspiration to teachers across the country, veteran and new. If I didn't live all the way in Alaska I would come visit your classroom and pick your brain.
