The drilling company paid 12.8 million to the public, and quite a bit more in material damages to the salt company. The drilling company went bankrupt soon after.

I can see BP drilling into a huge underground cavern and draining half the oceans. They'd be fined about three day's profits.

I was being sarcastic, but I'm not sure what your point is. Deregulation began in the late 70s and was introduced to the mainstream by Reagan and has been a long-term disaster eversince, with just enough short-term juice to boost the economy until you loose an election and have your political opponent (the idiot Democrats) deal with the impending or already unfolding disasters until people are tired of higher taxes, that are needed to fix everything again, and run back to their victimizer (GOP).

Evolution ≠ adaptation. Krill and shrimp are far from simple organisms, as they consist of cells with organelles (mostly) as well as functional, although somewhat primitive organ systems. Evolution, even in certain types of 'simple organisms' takes place over long generations due to random genetic mutations that could screw them over at any time. Adaptation is where over time an organism's offspring gradually figure out how to survive in a new environment, which is what you were referring to.

This happened in the 1980's. I wasn't sure if you were being sarcastic to modern politics, so if you weren't then ignore the first sentence of this comment.

i was there. they said the ceiling of the salt dome was 1/4 mile high. a guy was a doberman breeder on the east side, and all the dogs drowned. last time i visited, i was able to walk around the back side of the structure and see the collapsed railroad tracks. fascinating.

They were only looking for oil right? So this mess just involves salt and water?
