unfortunately, in a situation like that, no one knows when the light is going to be red or green

This is so cool. Immediately I start thinking, "What if this was implemented in reality?".
Imagine having speed cameras along roads with heavy traffic, keeping an eye on the speed in every point. Then put up electronic speed signs, not with upper speed limits, but rather speed recomendations, to smooth out traffic flow as well as possible. Any reason why that couldn't be done?

i can't visualize it... do you have the software? i need it, because i'm working with a proyect making intillgent traffic lights... i'd be very helpful... i appreciate your help, thanks!

What if you have a person driving below the average speed while everyone drives the average speed? Doesn't that mean you will still have the same situation as you would if people who drove fast were always sitting behind slow drivers? Since we know we can't get everyone to drive the same exact speed be it faster or slower then the speed limit why not just have a fast and slow lane? Oh wait we do it's just slow people love to use it because they want me to slow down. This test needs variables.

Videos like these need more attention.

Yea this was pretty much common sense to me too from the first day of me driving. This also saves A LOT of gas. Because where I live our roads are set up in a grid (google maps: Phoenix area) so i can see the light in front of me for about 3/4 of a mile and adjust speed accordingly so I rarely stop. I guess the point of this video is to inform this situation to the dumb people who race to a red light.

Good reason why we need changing speed signs. Stop and go traffic consumes more fuel, create more wear, more tear, more impulsive habits and more agressions. It may also increase the cases of heart attacks.
If you want a more accurate simulation, you should account for the 1or 2 in 5 people driving erratic speeds because they are on their damn cell phones.

@WisdomVendor unfortunately, it's not just cell phones, many people drive erratically and race up to the light even without cell phones. But you're right, it's people like that who slow down the traffic for all of us. In the future, when robots are driving cars, we won't have to worry about those people. It's well known that humans themselves make traffic worse by speeding up too fast (closing the space in front of them), slowing down too fast, and switching lanes too often.

Haha... OK Terrific. FYI, I had to be quiet because it was late at my house when I was recording.

PRetty Good. Another great experiment would be to lable a few of the cars(EG: "Car1", "Car2". and see how long it take them to go around the track at fast speed vs average speed. I think if people can place themselfs in the postion of car1 they may see that average speed is better.
And why is basic trafic theroy never thought in driver's ed?

I concur. I think most traffic laws are mindless orders. If drivers were explained why the law exists (go slow so no one gets hit because going fast means it's more dangerous for people) instead we are told to obey 10mph or 25mph speed limits. Or stop at red, go on green, rather than look at see if it's safe to go. No one looks anymore, if it's green, they go. It's dumbing drivers down. Traffic theory is amazing stuff, imagine if high school students learned it from day one!
