ANCHOR:
And we have continuing coverage of the earthquake in mainland China. Today we caught up with an engineer who explains why the Dujiangyan secondary school collapsed, killing hundreds inside and the questionable building methods used in the region. Here's more from our Tokyo team.
STORY:
You may remember early reports of a secondary school that collapsed, killing as many as 900 inside. Well construction engineer Xia Yifan, who now lives in Japan, says poor construction materials are to blame.
[Xia Yifan, Construction Engineer]: (Quote 1, male)
"The construction methods used for building these schools are wrong, as their resistance to earthquakes is particularly low. Another is 'jerry-rigged projects.' In the blue prints of these buildings, you can see that many schools use those hollow boards. Tangshan people call it 'Take you life board,' but they are still in use 30 years later."
Xia says these construction practices point to bigger issues with the country in general.
[Xia Yifan, Construction Engineer]: (Quote 2, male)
"The corruption, abuse of human rights for workers, and the collapse of the social and moral system are the three major reasons for today's existence of large number of jerry-rigged projects in China. As long as the dictatorship of the CCP exists, this situation will not improve."
Xia was persecuted by the CCP and was forced into exile in Japan... all because he published an article exposing jerry-rigged projects in China.
