I'm sure there was. There's a chart somewhere that shows the habitable zones for each color of the sun and according to this chart, when the sun was a newborn, it was white/white-bluish and the habitable zone was Mars. So I'm sure there was life on Mars but there probably can never be life there anymore. Maybe we should dig deep and find some fossils!
