The saying for this goes "Through every step of life you find freedom from within", but I found a kind of freedom I never wanted.

This is a video of one of my demos. I thought i'd edit together clips from here and there into videos to go along with some of my demos, rather than just the sound. Since people often have a limited attention span, thus a video may lure them into listening for longer.

The track is SAMBA PA TI. Originally performed by Santana.

When I was recording this, my approach was to keep it relevant to the original Abraxas version but I also wanted to add some further elements of my own as usual. But I wanted to keep it close to Abraxas so I was thinking and I hypothesized a "what if" scenario. What if Samba Pa Ti on Abraxas didn't fade out by 4:47? So I went for that approach and carried on the solo how I imagined it might continue. Then I hypothesized further..... What if Neal Schon has already joined the band by that point and threw something on the end? So I added some Neal-ish licks later on after the point at which it would already have ended on the original too. It also hit me to throw some of Jimi Hendrix's "Third Stone From The Sun" in there too. So it all came together in what you see here. A version of Samba Pa Ti that has elements of the original version as well as new elements.

SAMBA PA TI

Written by C. Santana
Arranged by E. Shi

guitar - Esan Shi
keyboards - Haywood Johnson
drums - Patric Carow
bass - Joerg Brauer
congas/percussion - Mann Lee / Patric Carow

Recorded / edited / mixed / produced by E. Shi

It's basically my demo version of Santana's "Samba Pa Ti" written by Carlos Santana. But I rearranged and remixed into a longer version with improvisation in the soloing.

I tried to add some personal flair to it yet keeping it in the same vein as the Abraxas version.

Keep checking for more demos as there will always be more to come.

And add my musical space http://www.myspace.com/shinkongo too. It's not complete yet but it will be updated soon with all demos.

The original "Cause We've Ended As Lovers" composition was performed by Jeff Beck on the album "Blow By Blow" and written by Stevie Wonder. That and footage used in the video are all copyright/the property of the respective owners.

  • Fantastic job, beautiful emotional playing. The edge and bite you put on your interpretation is excellent, as is the extra long "bonus" fade.

  • @selaznog1 Hahah thanks a lot!

  • You have achieved a nice guitar sound and your skill is at professional level definitely, but you'll have to be persistent to make a name for yourself. Your interpretation of Santana's 'Samba Pa Ti' is awesome, especially last 2 1/2 mins. of this track. Good luck!

  • Hi Esan, nice to meet you here but I should write "nice to listen you" It's a pleasure. Compliments for this your version of my favourite Santana's song. It was the soundtrack of my youth. A Kiss from Italy By Fiorella :-)
