  • Failing that

II: The White House to exert pressure on the site lease holders to do its bidding.

Have the lawyer explain how Congress, the Courts, the electorate and the press of all colors are likely to react.

Do please let us know what the lawyer explains to you, and how it enlightens you.

Never mind how it makes Mr Olbermann's indignation and implied demand appear.

Cheers, PA. Have a restful weekend.

  • It is clear what his complaints and demands are. That's fine.

never mind whom, if anybody, he was trying to convince. But he was barking at the wrong tree, the premise of many of his complaints erroneous.

Walk into a law office. Ask a lawyer to explain how practicable it would be for:

I: Federal Government--exercising right of eminent domain--to seize the 16 acres of private property, to expedite construction of a monument in accordance with Mr Olbermann's specifications.

    . . .

  • What is unclear or incoherent about his opinion? I don't think you do get it. Don't you realize that this is an editorial and not a stump speech? He's not trying to convince anyone of anything. He's simply trying to convey HIS thoughts on a tragedy and the exploitiation of it that followed. People identify with this. He asks questions that many are asking, and have yet to get the answers to.

  • > You simply do not get it, do you? You never will.

Behold, the intellectual indolence. The refusal to craft his argument such that it convinces anyone other than those who already believe the same.

No wonder we lost in 2000. More miserably so in 2004.

And unless we manage to convince non-hardliners, especially the minds who will take nothing less than a coherent argument, we'll lose again in 2008.

  • You simply do not get it, do you? You never will.

  • Gritted-teeth passion, delivery cadence, stringed quotes and demonising labels do not amount to much when one simply jumps from one point to another in a rambling monologue. The only people you manage to "convince" are those who already agree with you (see comments above for proof).

  • The day Mr Olbermann acquires the same coherence of argument and conciseness which Roberts, Will, Donaldson and many others on either side of the political divide effortlessly display is the day he earns the respect of (at least some of) those who disagree with his conclusions.

    . . .

  • In a democracy, there is the duty to seek change through the ballot. Which means persuading--others, not merely oneself.

A message, no matter how noble and no matter how passionately held, if delivered incoherently inevitably fails to convince.

America is not yet exclusively-populated by hardliners of two extremes. There are open intelligent minds who expect a coherent argument, who will be persuaded by it.

    Non-hardliners deserve nothing less.

  • I don't know if Americans will ever wake up, and realize the travesties that Bush and his cadre of dishonest, cowardly, and inept comrades have wrought upon this country, but they won't be able to say they were not warned. Patriots like Keith Olbermann may be wasting their time trying to educate an obtuse national conscious, but at least history will record that there were those who DID know the truth.
