  • A pivotal moment in the legacy of one of the founding fathers (alongside labelmates Harpers Bizarre) of the dreamscape genre. Love it!

  • @oolaef Yes, emotional resonance is subjective, I just find Brian Wilson managed to be both resonant and esoteric, even in his most "out there" stuff, for me anyway. I'm not the greatest Syd Barrett fan, imo Floyd was much more resonant without him. Early Floyd and solo Barrett have their own psycho charms too though.

Not that all music has to be emotionally "resonant" for me to like it, it can also be as I said more "intellectually" compelling, which is what I find Bjork to be.

  • @KingCrimson776 Surf's Up is incredible! I'm not sure exactly what you mean by resonant - it resonates with the listener? That's pretty subjective surely!

To me the likes of Brian Wilson, Van Dyke Parks and Syd Barrett, following through to Bjork today, for example (the 'wacky' artists) come up with the real magic - they don't condense their ideas into a more digestable format just so everyone will find it enjoyable. This is music for (pop) music geeks.

  • @runitecastle I don't think it's "bad" as such... maybe I was subconsciously comparing it too much to his work with Brian Wilson, "Surf's Up" and what have you. I hope it grows on me though, I wanted to like it.

By "wacky" I don't mean "inappropriate", just maybe... off-kilter for the sake of it (I don't mind avantgarde by any means, but it has to culminate in something either resonant or intellectually captivating... I just find this a bit muddled, though there is clearly potential here).

  • @KingCrimson776 guess i can hear what you're saying but i can't help but be totally mesmerized by his meandering, daydreamish pace, with every song on the album really each comprised of several vignettes that fall and fade into each other. its a really non-linear album that i initially didn't enjoy, but there's so little like it of its time, i kept coming back. the "wacky" is a matter of taste, none of it seems inappropriate to me? on a side note im not sure what to think of his other stuff

  • @runitecastle It's just unfocused and the wacky melodies never really culminate into any resonant effect... at best it's "somewhat intriguing", imo.

  • @KingCrimson776 could you elaborate?

  • You have to admit, this is kind of a mess.

  • DREAMS dreams ARE are STILL still BORN IN HOLLYWOOD!

  • such an epic tune, VDP is clearly top notch musician and songwriter, he should've done more music in late 60's early 70's
