Voters in the midwestern US state of Ohio have voted to reject anti-union legislation backed by the Republican governor and legislature.

The original measure had been aimed at trimming costs by limiting the collective bargaining rights of trade unions.

The Republican legislature said the law was vital to save money.

However, the workers wanted the measure repealed on the grounds that it discriminated against their members.

Al Jazeera's John Terrett reports from Washington.

  • @benjamin5028 Their justyfication of tax cuts for the rich is COMPLETE BULLSHIT. If ya wanna boost the economy you give money to the biggest consumers not the richest 1%ers. The"Trickle Down of Wealth" system = feeding Corporate America T-bone steaks while the Workin man sits on the floor and begs for the Bone. And if he ever has the gall to ask for a chunk of meat he's scolded and told how he's lucky to get the bone............

  • @nktank84 I used be in a union and I am a strong supporter of worker's rights. Many of these rich people do the hiring but tax cuts does not solve the problem, the rich just pocket this money. Any tax cut should be based on the rate of unemployment, the more people that are unemployed the higher the tax rate for the rich. Should be incentive based instead, of spray and pray.

  • @benjamin5028 Nevermind the big fat tax cut for the rich folk. The budget can afford to help the rich but not the working class? Nevermind the fact that the Unions agreed to the cuts the bastard proposed. How can you wanna cut wages of someone who makes 90,000 but support tax cuts for Millionaires? It never was about the Budget or he would've went with the cuts he proposed the union approved and been done with it. But no his motive is clear, DESTROY WORKERS' RIGHTS.

  • @ig33ku Yes our government. The same government that failed to do shit for the American worker until workers organized into unions to lobby and fight for the things we now have. Without Unions workers have no lobbyists on their side. Back in the 70s my dad and his coworkers had to fight the mining company tooth and nail to get a 50 cent raise even as the price of the ore they were mining hit record highs. Companies don't give a shit and niether does the gov unless we band together and demand it

  • @nktank84 You know you are comparing a communist country to a capitalist country correct? At this point you are telling me you have so little faith in our government that you vote in that they cannot or will not do the ethical or moral thing and fairly protect the working men? That my good buddy equates to the absolute failure of the American Democracy. Since, the now the US is run by money then the people should with their wallets and not their asses.

  • @ig33ku Because if it weren't for Unions "putting a gun to their head" we'd be like china where thousands of men die every year in the mining industry alone, instead of 25-50 here in the U.S. We'd be working for 12 hour days 7 days a week for pennies. Is that really what you want? You wanna work in a sweatshop? Or do you want everyone else to so you can get cheaper stuff?

  • @lumpfish99

They block/unblock comments on videos randomly. That wasn't the only video t hey block comments on, I think it depends on who uploads it. Al Jazeera certainly isn't pro USA

  • @RalphMarx And ppl wonder why they out-source. Workers blackmail to get higher salaries, consumers demand lower prices, shareholders want huge profits what a fucking joke. If they hate the company than boycott, let your money do the talking but we all know the consumers talk the big talk while they secretly buy the company's products. "Oh it's not the product that is at fault. Just the company."

  • @ig33ku because thats the system my friend, it isnt putting a gun to the head when talking about multi national conglomerates or lets say public sector workers, more prodding with a stick now. Mind you the state government should have be wiser in its pursuits of projects and dishing out the cash.

  • Unions prevent people getting fired for petty issues. Taking Union power allows the powers that be to fire anyone they with or without cause. For example they would fire a 90,000 a year teacher and hire 2 more for the same money, but now they can not do that. That money is tied up whether they like it or not. With these Union powers intact , there biggest bugdet issue wages and benefit is severely impaired.
