Dems. go head-to-head over Iraq war

Hello on this Monday, the 4th day of June 2007. I'm Kristin Volk with a UPI Headline update.

Democratic presidential hopefuls clashed over the Iraq war in a debate in New Hampshire yesterda. Former Senator John Edwards criticized Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama over their handling of a recent war-spending bill. Edwards claimed they quietly voted in favor of pulling out of Iraq with the measure but didn't show leadership on the issue. Obama shot back saying he's opposed the war from the start.

Newly released reports reportedly say that the number of troops sent to Baghdad this year as part of a new security plan can't accomplish the plan's initial goal. The report says American and Iraqi forces can protect the population in just 146 out of Baghdad's 457 neighborhoods. Military commanders say the operation is at a difficult point now as Iraqi police and army units have not provided all the units they had promised.

Russia's president is threatening to aim nuclear weapons at Europe if Washington builds a missile defense system on the continent. The White House has plans to place a radar system in the Czech Republic and interceptor missiles in Poland. They say the system is needed to counter a potential threat from Iran. President Vladimir Putin claims the plan could threaten Russia and must take steps to respond. Iran's top security official says the system is a joke because he says Tehren's missiles don't have the capability to reach Europe.

The prime minister of Somalia has survived a suicide car bomb blast. A Toyota Land Cruiser loaded with explosives crashed through the security gate of Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi's home in Mogadishu yesterday. But the attack did kill six of his guards. Gedi was at home when the incident happened, but afterwards was taken to an undisclosed location. The Prime Minister has survived two previous assassination attempts.
