Kupuna as well as hula experts have said that chants like these were not danced, at least in public, as they were considered very personal and private possessions of the ali'i. Our peope believe that one's mana (personal power) is kept in the hair, bones, and nails.

The 3rd to the last line names the Queen's hair as Mawaeikalani (Cleansed-to-purity-by-heaven)
. In the 6th line, Kuihewa is the shortened form of Kakuhihewa, a benevolent 15th century chief that ruled the island of O'ahu. O'ahu is poetically refrred to as O'ahu 'o Kakuhihewa (O'ahu of Kakuhihewa) in chants and songs.
Did they place first?
