The famous Vivace from Bach's Double Violin Concerto in d minor, BWV 1043 is one of the more tricky pieces in the repertoire, similar to the Sinfonia BWV 29 in terms of the articulation that was necessary. The long bowed phrases are difficult to synchronize and several attempts needed to be trashed before it sat right. A more patchwork type of recording was used instead of the one-part-at-a-time that I usually do. In other words, I would do a handful of measures from one part, then shift to another, then back, usually needing to redo the first part again, cycling like this in a round robin sort of way. The original parts are setup like this:

Solo Violin 1: Alto Melodica (shown)
Solo Violin 2: Alto Melodica (shown)
1st VIolin: Alto Melodica
2nd Violin: Alto Melodica
Viola: Alto Melodica (shown)
Cello: Bass Melodica (shown)

  • You are the perfect demonstration that the most important and functional aspect of baroque performance is good frasing. Let all "modern" musicians learn your correct frasings so Bach will be more rejoiced. Sincere compliments.

  • @CoroShlomot Thank you very much.

  • How do you keep the ensemble from falling apart?

  • @GlenShannon I rely fairly heavily on a click track. I say fairly, because sometimes I don't follow it. I also, for this video, round robin the tracks. Record one, then the other, then all, then redo the first. This tends to weed out potential problem spots. And I am also trying to be fairly critical about what parts need to be redone. If it starts to slide, I'll usually go back and redo it. Best, J

  • Friggin Excellent & impressive! =)

    Now....Händel, Queen Sheeba?

    (suggestion)

    =P

  • @StevenJeNova That's not a bad idea. I definitely should do some Handel. Maybe a Concerto Grosso. Thanks for your cont'd support - J
