Before there ever was a Wilhelm (Charge at Feather River, 1953), this is the original scene from Distant Drums (1951) for which the famous cry was recorded. I love how very clear you can hear it.

    It's a joke among producers to put it in EVERYTHING. An inside joke, somewhat. A lot of cartoons even use it here and there; just listen for it.

    I always thought this was originated from "The Return of the Jedi," and then I'd notice other films doing it and I'd think, WTF? I remember it being used in "Return of the King," more than once I think, and I found this very cheesy (for an otherwise great film.) I never understood why it would be used more than once. It stands out only because it's so silly. I finally discovered the term for it in a film criticism podcast and so I looked it up. I don't get why it's still used. It's goofy.
