  • The wire will create a "shadow" line on the area that it touches. The line is subtle, and can be light or dark depending on the firing. This is a subtle nuance and is not particularly clear in my photos. It is important that the wire is tightly bound as this will help to define the pattern . A really great effect is when you get a "halo" around the wire. I hope this is helpful, and thanks for your interest.

  • I use terra sigillata. There are two formulas that I use; one I brush on green ware, and I have another that I can brush on bisque. Each gives a different result. I do not recommend plain bisque as it may tend to be primarily a flat grey. It is important that the paper be tightly wrapped around the piece or you will not get uniformly black results unless that is what you may want. Of course, experimenting is part of the creative process

  • Thanks so much for your reply. Really useful info. Keep up the great work!

  • Beautiful work. Question: Is the "fine slip" terra sigillata? Does it have to be applied to achieve the black color or can plain bisque work?
