SEEVL -- Bringing Context to Music

When you listen to or buy music online - as more and more people do, with an estimated digital music market worth $5B in 2012 - you may be frustrated by the lack of context around it, and start asking yourself several questions: Who's that band? Who are its members? When did they start to play together? Why does this site recommend that I listen to that other band? ... This is what Seevl provides: an integrated view - combining biographies, fact-sheets, recommendations and explanations - together with advanced search features.

Seevl - a spin-out of the Digital Enterprise Research Institute at NUI Galway - aims to solve this issue and brings context to music, for everyone, everywhere on the Web. Seevl uses advanced Semantic Web technologies and principles to turn - in real-time - public data into structured knowledge about music. Seevl mines the cultural universe of artist / bands (labels, genres, members, timeframe, etc.) and links all this together to identify the connections - and infer new ones. In addition, the system provides advanced recommendations - including explanations to let users know how bands and artist are connected - and search features.

Seevl's technology is enabled in various products such as ContexTube - a browser extension for enabling context in music videos for YouTube - and made available to other developers through an API, opening the way to a groundbreaking approach to discover and learn more about the music you like. Currently, the company is developing additional products to enhance this music-in-context experience. In the long run, the company wants to disrupt the way people interact with music-related information online.
