After you descend to Middle Velma Lake, you are now backpacking up the four-mile, 1610' Backpacking Climb (A leg-climb, as opposed to Climber's Arm-climbing!) to Dicks Pass, at 9370'. Dicks Pass is located closer to the peak than the gap in the mountains. Backpackers usually climb up and through passes, not down to them! The gap in the mountains is usually named "the pass." We are backpacking through the Desolation Wilderness on the Tahoe to Yosemite Trail, now following the Pacific Crest Trail, to Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite, then on down the John Muir, and other trails, to Mount Whitney. For much more information about backpacking from Lake Tahoe to Mount Whitney, see the developing web site, TahoetoWhitney.com: http://tahoetowhitney.com/picturetrail/Tahoe_to_Alpine/Meeks_to_Echo_Summit/F...
