acupuncture with the needles attached to a semi-strong electrical outlet is what did it.. after 2 rounds of that, one day he was up and happy again. STILL NO muscle mass in his legs, it took a while for that to come back... but ever see a happy chipper wiener dog sprinting through the grass as fast as he can yapping his head off on just two legs? it was a miracle.

My miniature dachshund became paralyzed from the middle back down at the tender age of.. I believe it was, 5-6 years old (he's 16 now). We noticed problems a full month before paralysis happened. constant shaking, crying, cant stand up etc. It wasn't long before he was full-on paralyzed, it hurt watching him drag his hind legs around and pooping all over himself. He lost all muscle mass in his legs too. Then we tried acupuncture. Within a couple months he regained control over his whole body!

@101Osprey101 One thing that my Vet told me was to move both legs for him for excercise and do it as much as possible. We were not able to do it for my boy enough and his back legs eventually became atrophied and could not move at all. sometimes they can get a little movement back.

Sorry to here of your boy Fritz. My boy Bailey was also paralyzed at the age of 6 but it also never let him down. He loved his wheelchair and lived 6 more years.Sadly I had to let him go at the age of 12 when his back went again and it could not be fixed. Watching this reminds me of him.

@dachs4me Fritz is the center of attention whenever he is out in his chair. People come out of the wood works to see him and ask about him. He loves it. in a weird sort of way, this has made him even cuter. I hope he never gets any worse in his condition. On a positive note, he has been walking at least a few times each day!
Sorry about Bailey. I am sure he was loved more words can say.

My mini dachshund was paralyzed due to IVDD 2 months ago. We are still getting used to the adjustments and are using a doggy cart for her to walk around in. She is doing fine. :)

@strangelittlegirl00 It isn't hard to adjust to their needs. I don't think he takes any more time than prior to his paralyzation. If anything, he takes LESS time. I no longer have to WAIT for him to pee. :)
Sorry to hear about your puppy. Hang in there. They do understand that you are helping them, and they do give their undying love in return. Don't give up hope either. Fritz has been walking!.

how do u prevent this , this is my biggest fear too , i help fortify him with glucosamine and have pillows near the edge of my bed when he jumps off it.

@StThomasMore405 Well, not too sure how it can be 100% prevented. Keep them from jumping up is what I have read, but it's a dachshund, they jump up on things, like it or not. Most important is to watch for the signs of pain: walking stiff, with a hunched back. Have them checked immediately if the show those signs and are not acting as they normally do. Strict cage rest is also a good idea until you can have them checked.
We have stairs next to our bed.
