All Indians know this Bhajan... but only a few get the meaning. This bhajan according to me is one of the most beautiful one i have ever heard. It doesn't try to say good things about God or to please him. It just says something so simple. I must confess, i being an Indian and having heard this forever, never invested the time and attention in getting to understand its meaning. I thank you from the bottom of my heart to post it here in this format... with the meaning and with the wordings.

A person of God is the one, who understands the pain of others.

Such a person helps those in need, and does not boast about it.

This person is polite to all people and does not condemn or criticize anyone.

He/She is pure in speech, deed and thought, glory to the mother who gave birth to such a virtuous person.

He is equanimous, has given up all desires and looks at other women as mothers.

He does not speak untruth and does not covet others' wealth.

He preserves equanimity and,

Never stains his mouth with falsehood,

Nor touches the riches of another.

The bonds of desire cannot hold him.

Ever in harmony with Rama nama,

His body in itself possesses

All the places of pilgrimage.

As translated into English by Gandhiji himself The true Vaishnava He is a real Vaishnav Who feels The suffering of others as his own suffering. He is ever ready to serve, And is never guilty Of overweening pride. He bows before everyone, Despises none, Preserves purity in thought, Word and deed. Blessed is the mother of such a son, In every woman he reveres his mother.

i also feel sorry i got know abt it through movie gandhi and shows telecasted on tv not a bhajans

awesome bhajan but deriving meaning from wikipedia means there is some mess. i have noticed many parts of the song where the lyrics was trying to give meaning but missed the essence

even though this song is written with refrence to vaishnavs...it actully teaches all of us how to live and lead a meaningful life. adding values in ourselves n other's life.
