@tommyleehog ... its still called sampling dingwing. You wouldnt have "lion sleeps tonight" if they never heard this, its the driving backbone for the entire song... I can take any melody and add my own words still dont make it mine.

It's wonderful to hear the original inspiration for the later songs. It has a very rich, soulful sound to it. I can feel it vibrating in my chest when I listen to it. Beautiful.

True, most covers of this simple, raw original are also powerful in their way, yet it took a very long time for the popular following of this song to learn that it was a South African zulu folk piece that launched what has now evolved to the status of timeless pop classic. More poignant still is that Mr Linda died impoverished, and it is galling to recall how record labels fought against any compensation for his descendants.... not even a token of gratitude...big business, small hearts

@mattlove1 ... 'glossing' is when a speaker of one language (or even dialect) reworks a word or phrase so that it's easier to pronounce in his/her own language. From the Greek via LAtin glossa = tongue

@Vamphaery I completely agree. I like all iterations of the music, and every version I've ever heard. I don't know why people have to say "only the authentic original is good" or "this is boring, only the version by the Tokens is good" or whatever. I think cultural exchange is good - as long as the creators aren't financially exploited. There has been some justice for Linda's family, finally, so lets just enjoy the song

@quantaresources The lyrics to Danny Boy were written by English lawyer Frederick Edward Weatherly in 1910, and set to the tune of Londonderry Air, a tradtional tune collected in Ireland. The lyrics for the Lion Sleeps Tonight were written in the early 60s and the song was recorded by the Tokens - Disney used it later. The tune was written by South African musician Solomon Linda in 1939. I think "Most people" posting here got it at least as right as you - or much better.

@ladymesc1 Staggerlee is an interesting one.... and also House of the Rising Sun!

@mattlove1 and of course Linda knew that lions don't live or hunt in jungles - it seems to me that the tin pan alley writers of the Lion Sleeps Tonight lyrics knew it was a song about a lion, but that was about it. Of course, if you can provide me with a complete translation of Linda's original lyrics, then there will be something to compare. And of course the melody and arrangement is a direct steal, I just wonder about your claim about the lyrics.

@12qw34er56rt I assume since you are so willing to call people names, you have some profound knowledge of this, so maybe you can help me out here. It seems that was what Pete Seeger thought the song was about, but it seems most likely the song was about Linda's own experiences with lions as a child. Rian Malan, the South African journalist that broke this story wrote that Linda's semi improv lyrics were something along the lines of, "Lion! Ha! You're a lion!"

@tommyleehog But this is not a recording of Wimoweh, it's Mbube, the original song. Wimoweh is a mishearing of the original song's chorus of "Uyimbube", Zulu for "You are a lion." Wimoweh is full of nonsense syllibles, but the Mbube has actual lyrics. The Lion Sleeps Tonight is a version of the same song with new lyrics, but the tune is the same all the way through as I pointed out elsewhere, I don't understand how you can't hear that.

@jonohx That is wrong, and it's slander, and you should be ashamed for spreading it. Of course, shame is not an emotion that people feel any more, is it? We are liberated from facts, truth, conscience, and we tear other people down to make ourselves feel big. Linda was ripped off by a lot of people, but Pete Seeger wasn't one of them. You don't have to go any further than Wikipedia to learn that.
