The Taepyeongmu is a dance performed with a wish for peace and prosperity in the country.
Although the origin of the dance is not known, it is believed to be one of those dances developed by Han Seongjun, a well-known dancer and drummer in the 1900s, by recomposing a shaman from the Gyeonggi-do.
Taepyeongmu is performed by a man and a woman dressed like a king and a queen, respectively, to show a grand and magnificent look of Royal Court.
The rhythm for the dance includes Nakgungjangdan beats, Teobeollim, Ollimchae and Dosalpuri, which are rather hard and complicated compared to other dance rhythms.
The various steps performed with the change of rhythm, including double steps, short steps, walking with the knees up and heel bending, are dazzling, yet displays the beauty of self-restraint.
The Taepyeongmu dance is a performing art that requires most technically advanced stepping skills among the traditional Korean dances.
It displays most clearly the characteristics of the Korean dances.
It has a high artistic value that can be appreciated by the entire world.
The dance is now preserved by a master dancer Gang Seonyeong.
