Released in 1989, 10 years after it was recorded, PERSONAL MOUNTAINS is a set by Keith Jarrett's so-called "European Quartet." It's a live performance in Tokyo, one week prior to the engagement at New York City's Village Vanguard that resulted in the NUDE ANTS album. What's remarkable about both of these releases is how they showcase the power of this ensemble, only briefly glimpsed on the studio albums (as with the wonderful pair, BELONGING and MY SONG). There has always been a folk-like bearing to the quartet's sound, and their studio work underscores this with concise pieces. However, live they stretch out, creating organically changing landscapes which are by turns emotionally compelling, spiritually resonant, and rich with surprise and invention. The aptly titled 15-minute "Personal Mountains," captures the feel of the Scandinavian homeland of Jarrett's cohorts. Recorded live in Tokyo, Japan in April 1979. Includes liner notes by Peter Ruedi. Personnel: Keith Jarrett (piano, percussion); Jan Garbarek (soprano & tenor saxophones); Palle Danielsson (acoustic bass); Jon Christensen (drums).
Jarret's own Giant Steps.

this is how jazz should be. jan garbarek's tone sounds like angels screaming whispers of love into the heart of the world.

This is actually my favourite Jarrett piece. I love it, so much grove.
