Twas the Night Before Finals
By Dan Patrylak '10

'Twas the night before finals, and all through the hall,
Towson students were studying, making no sounds at all.
Note cards were stacked, in tall piles with care,
In hopes that straight A's, would soon be theirs;

The students were reading, stressed out in their beds,
While visions of formulas danced in their heads;
My roomie in pajamas, and I in my cap,
Had just fallen asleep, textbooks in our laps,

When outside our hall there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
The moon shining bright against Newell Field snow
Gave the luster of mid-day, to cars on York Road,

When, what then should my weary eyes decipher,
But a miniature sleigh, with eight flying tigers,
With a big ole' striped driver, who flew like a hawk,
I knew in a moment, it must be our Doc!

More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
"Now, Study! now, Read! now, Think and Discern!
On, Ponder! on Cram! on, Review and now Learn!
To the top of the Towers! to Scarborough Hall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"

So up to the hall-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of erasers, books and pens too.
I heard it right then, on top of the hall
The prancing and dancing of each little paw.

As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the elevator, Doc came out with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his toes.
Who studied? Who didn't? Only Doc knows!

A bundle of goodies he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
He pulled out his gifts, everything that we'd need
To ace all of our finals, and finally be free!

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon let me know I had nothing to dread;
At each door that he passed, he left a surprise
A present we'd need, for when we would rise

Coffee to Paul (he hadn't slept in a week)
Ballet slippers to Betty (for her dance final at three!)
A calculator to Cathy, for quadratic equations
A new tie for Ben, for his speech in persuasion

Then laying his finger on the side of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the elevator he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew, like the down of a thistle.

"Good luck on your finals," he shouted out from his sleigh
"Don't stress yourselves out, it's a holiday!"
Then I heard him exclaim, as he drove out of sight,
"Happy holidays to all, and to all a good night!"
