Having some fun today flying the 550 in the wind between the snow showers. Hurricane 550, CNC head, 503mm Maniac blades, stock plastic tail case and blades, lightweight Gaui paddles, z30 1100 motor, geared 13T pinion, 42F, 20owb, 61R, sport bec, align 75 esc, 2 old 20c 3s megapower 3300mAh packs in series (still doing ok after 63 cycles), 3x ds821's on cyclic, GY520 and 9254 on tail, flat throttle S1 at 80% S2 100% (S1 was used for this flight to increase flight time). A big thanks to my daughter Jennifer, age 13, for working through her fear of the heli and staying less than 30' of me during the flight.

  • The tail is solid in fast backwards flight and tail drops with the 520 so the spartan should be fine too since they are so similar. You may want to get faster cyclic servos or at least run them at 6v if you are into the quick snap flip/roll 3d stuff. I like the hurricanes because they are very smooth and fun to fly out at a greater distance (unlike my 200 and 450's)... they can be set up to do some wild 3d as well if that's more your flying style.

  • Thanks! Will do!

  • Thanks man. I appreciate the feedback. I'm fine w/tail in invert + backwards flying invert, as long as it's clockwise. i just didn't do any or invert tail drops this flight. Backwards UPRIGHT is another story though! that gives me big trouble, but ONLY clockwise for some reason. I'm solid doing invert hurricanes, only clockwise though. I'm on the sim everyday.. going back to all orientations again, so i'm sure i'll get it, eventually. it's just a matter of parts and time heheh. :-)

  • Nice flight! I'll eventually get the electronics in mine and hopefully be able to use it for the advanced maneuvers I got it for. How well does yours hold the tail in backwards flight? I'll be using a Spartan on mine, so I don't think that will be too much a problem, but I'm really wanting to use mine for practicing piro-flips and other tricks I am not comfortable with performing so low with my T-REX 450 SE V2. Any suggested upgrades you have will be of great value. Thanks for posting.

  • loop requires modulating elev, pitch. Coordinated turn requires pitch, rudder, elev, aile and thus considered an advance maneuver.

I would work on forward, backward, inv forward, and inv backword circles in both left and right orientation. when done correctly, all your sticks would remain in one spot and heli will execute the circle by itself.

  • While doing it, maintain level tail boom ( high boom means too much rudder ). This is the fundamental to funnels, hurricanes, piro funnels etc.

  • Heli flying is about balancing. You first learn to balance in hover. You then learn to balance in a turn. Whenever someone asks me to evaluate their flight, I count number of coordinated turns in constant altitude. Since I haven't seen any, I would suggest you start working on both left and right circle. This is the key to advancing to the next level. While executing this, rudder should be following the turn not initiating the turn.

  • looking good man, youve came along way since last time i saw you flying, only thing i might work on is doing some tail in inverted stuff and some backwards flying upright and inverted, other than that looking good,
