This is a series of gameplay vids I'm doing highlighting overlooked games for the PS1. I'm playing on a PS2 with texture smoothing on.

Disclaimer: This is a very hard game, and won't be for everyone.

One is a Contra style romp for the PS1 that's also extremely overlooked.

It didn't get particular good ratings from most sources (GamePro's Major Mike gave it a good score though), and it does have it's share of problems. There are some levels made harder later on with tricky jumps. The jumping takes a little getting used to. OK, it takes a lot of getting used to. Those areas can be extremely frustrating if you don't give them your utmost concentration. The screen, at times, gets so cluttered with explosions that it's hard to see what you're doing. Also, some may find the game to be a little repetitive, but that's how any shooter of this type can be.

The checkpoints in the game are also few and far in between, extra lives are hard to come by as well, and you'll have to replay the entire level from the beginning when you continue.

All that aside, I still enjoy playing this game. It keeps it simple. Shoot everything, and that's what I like about it. It's also got an interesting life bar setup. In order to both gain your life, and upgrade your weapon, you have to destroy stuff. The more stuff you destroy, the higher you life goes, and the more powerful your weapon is.

This game is challenging (It's got three adjustable difficulties), but that's part of the appeal. At first this game will kick your ass. It's not a game that you're going to sit down and master in a day. It's got that oldschool style to it where you have to learn the game or it will school you. If you don't have a problem with that then check this game out. It's got all the challenge of a Contra title. If you frustrate easily, however, you'll probably want to skip this one.

One is actually similar to another PS1 game called Apocalypse (with Bruce Willis), except it came first. In fact, if you were a fan of Apocalypse, then One should be right up your alley.

Another Interesting fact is that this game is developed by Visual Concepts (of NFL 2K franchise fame) of all people.

One is only available on the PS1.

Note: This game is also damn near impossible to look up footage on on youtube, because of it's common name. I've actually had a vid of this game up for a long time, and I can't even find it when I search the game up on youtube.

I also forgot that if you hold L1, he'll keep his gun aimed in the direction you're facing and you can strafe left to right. As you can see I don't use that maneuver in this vid, but I remembered it after I had captured the footage.

NOTE: This game is now available on the Playstation Store for download, so those with PS3s now have the option to play it. Good luck, you'll need it.

  • I've been trying to find the name of this game for years now. It's been etched into my memory because of all the hilarious bugs I encountered with a rented disc.

    The game wasn't bad either

  • 5:45 hahaha michael jackson voice

  • It was one of my favorites on the PS ... it was overlooked by a lot of gamers for some unknown reason, and their was never a sequel ... I wish they remade this one and turn it into a series .

  • @rhix I see. Sounds funny indeed.

  • @Lagash1973 the energy meter doubled as both a life bar and rage level indicator. i think color represented your life and the speed it rotated was your rage. if you blew up enough stuff it would turn white and you'd go ballistic on stuff lol.

  • @rhix That could be an explaination indeed, but actually there's nothing as hud besides that green and red polygonal life energy indicator. :-| I liked and played some of this game when I was 25 or so, but definitely preferred other kinds of games as Medievil and Resident Evil 2. ;-)

  • @Lagash1973 if i remember this game correctly, destroying objects built up your "rage" meter. I'm assuming that was his purpose but i could be wrong. I loved this game as a kid.

  • I got this game since yesterday and wow, i'm getting all the memories of PlayStation in the present-day again.

  • This game looks good. Do you recommend buying it?

  • this is why i plan on getting this clip about 6billion views i want it remade
