Protest in Okinawa against Kadena

This was the site today as the left wing and anti war, anti US base, and peace people marched around Kadena Air Base in Okinawa Japan. The people in the trucks and vans with really loud speakers shouting are the right wing "Uyoku" speaking out against their march. They were fighting and stopping traffic too, it was great fun!

Man there was another one of these last weekend. They sure do love shopping at our BX/PX Commissary, Dating our troops, and our money. I can't wait to get the hell off this island and I just got here. I new I would hate it. :(

Huh? That's a pretty ignorant statement you realize right? Saying "they" as such a broad term, I doubt "they" (the extreme right wing protestors) care about shopping at the BX or our "money" as you put it. Do you even realize these protestors make up a very very tiny percent of the population, many of whom are from mainland? Those you see at the BX are an even smaller percent of the population, you DO realize this right? It's more of a novelty than anything else.

Why do you "hate" it there? Okinawa is absolutely beautiful, the way of life is easy, the weather is great, the people are SUPER nice. Get off your ass and do stuff off base before you go around saying you "hate it" there.

Im reading Chalmers Johnson , and he says Okinawa's air base is just a big waste of money.

I would have to completely agree with him. In fact, after you mentioned his name, I did some googling and read a few hours about him and what he says. I find myself agreeing with most of what he writes.

I think they should all close. For all the reasons you listed, plus that we can't afford to have them there anymore. Okinawans should be able to live their lives as the culture they once were before the bases came. They were much better off. Western Culture has screwed up alot of the good things about the island.

I was in Okinawa , leaving just before Reversion 72. We had demonstrations routinely. One union strike closed down the bars Nov-Dec 70?. Miraculously the strike was over for New Years, as shops/bars owners were P.O.ed loosing a ton of money. Koza came alive again :)

@mlbirdinground same, I was in oki for 3 1/2 years and plan to go back with my okinawa wife and kids. Never heard much about rape cases but I did hear that some okinawa women call rape because they regret the night because the male wasent cuddling. Heard that from a lawyer out there who said that was the reason for those cases that she ran into.

@mlbirdinground they also provide alot of income so saying that all the military provides is rape of okinawan girls is a gross over exaggeration because i was there when that happened too, you cant blame the entire military for one dumbasses action.

They where protesting the marines because they where coming into the bars getting drunk and raping the locals. I was there at the time kadena new base housing.

Jumped to my conclusion.....I lived there for 7 years...between 1990-1997......I studied Shorin Ryu under MAster Kise! I understand the Okinawan protests because they dont want you there......just like we dont want you here on our island you call USA. All you do is take....and now you think Okinawa is your home....its called appropriation! You've appropriated their island..GTFO
