- The Mediterranean octopus so fascinated Captain Cousteau with its complexity of adaptations, defenses and intelligence that it lent inspiration to the title of his last book. The octopus eats mollusks and crustaceans that it catches in a variety of ways: it gropes for prey, using its tentacles to feel along rocks and in crevices; it pounces on a target, covering it with its mantle; it blasts away sand with its siphon to expose buried shellfish; and it opens a jar to get at a lobster.
- La pieuvre méditerranéenne a tant fasciné le Commandant Cousteau par sa capacité d'adaptation, ses défenses et son intelligence, qu'elle a inspiré le titre de son dernier livre. La pieuvre se nourrit de mollusques et de crustacés qu'elle attrape de différentes manières : elle cherche sa proie à l'aveuglette, utilisant ses tentacules pour sentir la paroi des rochers et l'intérieur des crevasses ; elle bondit sur sa cible, en la recouvrant de son manteau ; elle chasse le sable avec son entonnoir pour découvrir les animaux enterrés ; et elle est capable d'ouvrir un casier pour y prendre un homard.
