THE SONG WAS WROTE BY AMANDA MCBROOM FOR THE MOVIE OF JJ IT'S ORIGINAL NAME OF SONG AND MOVIE WAS CALLED PEARL WHICH WAS JJ'S NICKNAME BUT DUE TO HER PARENTS NOT GIVIING PERMISSION TO DO THE MOVIE THEY HAD TO CHANGE THE NAME OF SONG AND MOVIE HENCE THE ROSE!!!! SO AS YOU CAN SEE JJ NEVER SANG THIS SONG AND WAS NOT EVEN STILL ALIVE WHEN IT WAS RECORDED BUT BETTE DOES IT SO MUCH JUSTICE IN THE MOVIE AND ON THE RADIO!!! BOTH WOMEN ARE LEGENDS IN THEIR OWN TIME!!!! SO HOPE THIS CLEARS THE CONFUSED

The movie was loosely based on the life of Janis Joplin - entitled "The Rose" w/ Bette Midler playing the starring role of Janis, and singing this theme song, which at the end of the movie is incorporated into a variation of her death. Great movie & beautiful theme song. The basic premise is the lure of alcohol and drugs in the entertainment field and being treated as a commodity vs as a person. The same as Marilyn Monroe - only Joe DiMaggio knew her personal personae. Hollywood helped kill her.
