The Velours hailed from New York, U.S.A. The group comprised of Jerome Ramos, Don Haywoode, and John Cheatdom, They were a doo-wop group with many releases who ended up on MGM in the mid-Sixties, recording this classic piece of Northern Soul called "I'm Gonna Change". Then, in the late 1960s, with a name change, they moved to England and became the Fantastics, as the group was now into soul rather than their early doo-wop roots. Releases followed on various labels, Deram, Bell, and Polydor, with the group setting up residence in England. Their biggest hit was "Something Old Something New", and Don Haywwode's daughter, Sid Haywoode, became a major eighties hit artist in her own right. John Cheatdom got them all back together to film this classic for The Strange World Of Northern Soul.

  • Is my mind playing tricks on me, or did this video not make it to the Stange World set in the end? Haven't seen it for ages to be honest :-/

  • Yes it was on there, but every video I have posted here on YouTube has been re-edited and they are now drastically different to the versions we put on The Strange World set.

  • Quality tune. KTF

  • I wasn't shocked at all because I have tons of Velours music. You should check out some of their 50's recordings.. They were a heavy R&B outfit. The reason why this one song had a Four Seasons sound is that I'm Gonna Change originally was done by The Four Seasons as an LP track

  • this is one of the best northern vids i have seen on youtube, the lead singer looks a real cool dude!

  • Thumbs up from me! LOVED dancing and singing along to this, thank goodness for Ian Levine, always appreciated his postings onto YTube

  • I always thought this group were Italian Americans.

  • Gosh.I've had this record on MGM for over 20 years. In a funny kind of way, I always thought the Velours were a New York, blue eyed soul outfit...only because they sounded similar to the Four Seasons. Was anyone else shocked by this fantastic revelation or should I grab my coat now?

  • oh yes i remember it well!!! sigh!!! those were the good old days xxx
