The mermaid could exist on dry land only as long as she didn't make a single sound. If she did, then she would melt into blood. And when the prince went to kiss her, she uttered an involuntary gasp. From that moment she knew she was doomed, so shut herself away to die.

That is one of the most beautifuly done things i'd ever seen. I got alittle confused at the end, though. Why was there all the blood around the mermaid?
