An almost disturbingly cute game, ふしぎな森のポコラ is a slightly aggravating but very fun and addictive game made by Marcken Software Developer, the same people who developed Fuwaru the Apprentice. It was the second of their two games to be released. The idea of behind the game is that a 5 year old girl is visiting her grandmother in the country for the summer and discovers strange, furry animals known as Pokora, while she stays there. They are curious creatures who hoard acorn nuts and seeds, and the girl, being as curious as she is, wants to capture them for fun. You can name this girl. Let's just call her Meitsuki (I called her Chi-Chi in the video and she seems to go by Natsumi by default).
I have little doubt in my mind that some of the elements within the story and game were inspired by Hayao Miyuzaki and Studio Ghibli's masterpiece, "My Neighbor Totoro", in which two girls move to a new home and find furry wood/soot spirits living in there (the main spirit of which is called Totoro by the younger of the two girls, Mei) dancing among nature and harvesting nuts as sacred items. Meitsuki even wears a similar dress and has the same hairstyle as Satsuki, the older sister of MNT. It was even noted by the devs at one point that they noticed the similarities and perhaps found Totoro as an inspiration for Pokora.
In FnMnP, you capture Pokoras for points, and capturing the ones that have nuts add to your "currency", which you can use to buy new dresses that improve your stats. You'll meet various types of Pokora with different behavorial traits and parameters and various obstacles that can slow you down. You can also find items that you can deliver to various places on the map that give you speed boosts and such. The girl can even do a super sprint and speed dive into enemies which looks sweeeeeet when you catch them on a dive. Additionally, there are also bonus stages that help you earn extra "money". You can play levels over and over to improve your time and it's very addicting as I said before. It's like a glorified version of tag. This game was nominated for awards back in the day and has various versions released, though they are mostly all the same. It has won the "Free Games Award of 2004". The game has also become free. Follow the green button road (it has Japanese and English). The developers now go by Lizsoft and have made titles like "Fortune Summoners", which is heralded as one of the best ARPG Doujin games. Enjoy.
