The original plan for Berryz Koubou was that it would be a sub-group of H!P Kids, and the various kids would cycle through it from year to year. That's what the "Koubou" is all about -- it means "workshop," as in the group being a workshop for the Kids.
However, the first set of girls in Berryz Koubou gelled so well that the management was reluctant to break them up again, and thus the remaining girls were formed into C-ute.
Airi was never in Berryz Koubou.
