What a good dog :) I love how she yawns, as if to say "that was easy... ask me to do something harder, mom!"

Hopefully, you might build up her confidence for the hand hold in water rescue by just working with two fingers in the glove, letting her hold the empty ones. Then gradually, insert more fingers. But I find it very slow progress. Keep it up, you and Rosie are doing so well.

Rosie is talented. Training looks really good. Got the hold, recall, and much more. Brrr. Snow.

Do I just keep working with her like this (with super amounts of praise) and start to increase the time hand is in her mouth once her discomfort eases? How do I get her to really hold onto my hand? Right now, she's taking my hand into her mouth, but not getting grip where she could "save" me. And finally, how do I practice with her moving around with my hand in her mouth? ... Thanks so much for the training information!! I'm going to hunt down a boat for the back yard!! Can't wait to work!!

Thanks. Have read your book up to the hand "grab". (Think it's really great!) We tried the hand grab as you suggested (minus the glove); was amazed, she took it in her mouth after a few asks. !! Then we did this several times, treating after each success. I noticed she started to look frazzled & worried about it. Like she thought there was something wrong with my hand in her mouth. I made a big deal about praising her taking my hand (which re-assured her she'd done the right thing).

Rosie the Dog shows off some of her skills. This Newfoundland is practicing "grab" and "hold" with her leash for emergency situations. If I have fallen and can not reach her leash, she can carry it while going for help. Eventually, she will be trained as my Service Dog. She also uses these skills in Water Rescue (we're training for JR title) and with handy tasks like picking up the remote & dropped keys.
