The homeless and needy in your area have bigger problems that being made fun of verbally, you know, like finding food or not freezing to death, once there is nobody living in our streets, or starving to death in our cities, THEN maybe it would be a good time to educate people about being nicer to mentally retarded people, but generally, people practically fall over each other trying to be nice to the MR/DD people, especially in schools. Not nearly the problem the PSA ads would have you believe.

I honestly dont get this, any of it. Where do you get the idea that it is acceptable to dictate people's freedom of speech to them because you are offended? what happened to building up people's confidence and self esteem so they are not hurt by verbal insults? @marcab1an let me clarify because i mistyped a few weeks ago.... the point of this campaign is NOT to pass a law restricting the use of the r word but rather to spread the idea and cause a change societal trend and culture. that is not illegal my friend so dont talk about "restricting rights" and the "freedom of speech."

"retard" / "retarded" IN OF ITSELF is not purely bigoted/derogatory, or not-bigoted/not-derogatory - and I think the reaction - so far as the reacting to the word itself, as opposed to the use - is kinda frightening.

Believe it or not, there are non-bigoted, non-derogatory uses [COMMON uses too], and unlike some words, those uses has always been there.

I think that this is one of those cases where we should look at the use, not the word itself.

You are right about some things. You do have a right to free speech. The constitution protects your right to use bigoted language. Most people dont know that they are being bigoted when they use the "r" word. We are trying to educate thos people. Now there will be people who will find out about our movement and still decided to use the word. Its there right. They have a right to bigotry as do you. If its fine with you to use this word knowing the harm it causes well then may God open your heart

Also, try to think of it this way the “n” word is not illegal. The literal meaning of the “n” word is “a black person”. The “n” word is a problem because connotatively it is derogatory. Well so is the “r” word and that is why we are trying to change the way people speak not change any laws
