Tajikistan is a small landlocked country and it is considered as store house of various biodiversity, such as wheat, fruits, nuts, vegetables and corn. Majority of people are engaged in livestock farming and fruit production. GEF Smal Grants Programmes was started in June 2009 supporting local NGOs and community-based organizations to implement environmental conservation projects. Programme grantees are deeply involved in local communities and other stakeholders in a participatory, self-monitory process. Small Grants Programme is a highly decentralized, democratic, innovative , transparent and country driven model. Grants selection is guided by national strategic paper. It targets all possible sources, establish and maintains strong partner relations with donor agencies and governments.
It is important for rural population to access finance, infrastructure or employment resources related to existing policies in biodiversity conservation and adapting climate change to enable GNOs to address climate risks through conservation and sustainable use of agrobiodiversity. Further plans and initiatives in SGP Tajikistan include community nursery development, rehabilitation of mountain forest to mitigate disaster, promote beekeeping, promote local market for medical herb and other income generating initiatives, such as green house nurseries and conservation rare valuable local species.
